*** BRING YOUR OWN CLEANUP BUCKET AND REUSABLE GLOVES. No cleanup supplies will be provided for this event, though you MIGHT win a prize if you decorate your own personal cleanup bucket in a creative way with an ocean conservation message, as this is part of the March for the Ocean.
On World Oceans Day weekend (June 9), thousands are expected to march in DC and at simultaneous events across the U.S and around the world. Surfrider Foundation Broward County Chapter and Free Our Seas and Beyond will host the March For The Ocean Celebration at Charnow Park on Hollywood Beach, 1500 N. Broadwalk,. The intention is to create an atmosphere of positive community activism celebrating our oceans with music, art, and environmental non- profit organizations. We will be marching for clean oceans, healthy beaches, and marine life. It will raise awareness for issues facing our oceans, such as offshore drilling, plastic pollution, ocean acidification, and more.
The free event takes place from 9am.- 1pm. Festivities will feature positive reggae vibes from DJ Lance-O of Kulcha Shok Muzik, an art contest for best ocean themed costumes, posters, and beach clean up buckets, marine debris art on display created by Free Our Seas and Beyond, and other ocean advocates.
A marching band will leading paraders at 10 am north to the Marine Environmental Education Center (MEEC). ***YOU CAN CLEAN UP AS YOU MARCH. At the MEEC halfway point, paraders can enjoy an icee, refill water bottles, visit Captain the sea turtle, and cool off under a sprinkler before heading back to Charnow Park.
