Pelican Harbor Coastal Cleanup

On the third Saturday of every month, volunteers can assist the Pelican Harbor Marina staff beautify this coastal park and keep our ocean ecosystem healthy. Please register on Park Link to sign your waivers.

This opportunity is made possible with the support of The International SeaKeepers Society. Marine debris isn't an ocean problem - it's a people problem, be part of the solution! Come join SeaKeepers every month at Pelican Harbor! Weather permitting, we will clean up Pelican Island which is just across the Biscayne Bay. Make sure to visit the SeaKeepers tent for the check-in, safety briefing, and instructions which will be prior to boarding the skipper. Follow and monitor our Instagram page, @seakeepers for updates!

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Identifying and removing microplastics (any plastic fragment < 5mm in length) from Pelican Island and/or Pelican Harbor
  • Cleaning the shoreline of debris and man-made trash
  • Optional: Sort out recyclables from your findings for later drop-off in an appropriate facility/receptacle
  • Optional: Utilize the Marine Debris Tracker App to help create a bigger picture of marine debris and plastic pollution through collecting open data, generating scientific findings, informing policy, and inspiring upstream design. You can earn extra community service hours by participating!

Qualifications: Youth under 15 must have a parent/guardian present.

Commitment Expected: Gloves and trash bags will be provided, but volunteers are encouraged to bring their own reusable gloves and refillable water bottle to reduce waste. Reef-safe sunscreen and comfortable shoes are recommended. Community service hours letters will be emailed, by request, following the event.
