During the 31st International Coastal Cleanup in 2016, 2,875 Broward County volunteers removed 7,193 pounds of trash from our coastline while more than 18.4 million pounds of trash was collected by more than 500,000 volunteers worldwide. Together, more than 12 million volunteers have removed more than 228 million pounds of trash over three decades!
The Coastal Cleanup is part of a year-round effort to find solutions for marine debris, which can damage sensitive coastal habitats and kill thousands of wildlife, including birds and fish, each year. Every piece of trash volunteers find will be tracked and included in the Ocean Trash Index, the world's largest database on marine litter. Volunteers will also collect information about the items found and this data will be given to the Ocean Conservancy to learn more about the global debris problem, develop ways to educate the public, and find solutions. Volunteers can contribute to this database in real-time using the Clean Swell app (available for free download on the App Store and Google Play).
