Beach Huddle Cleanup, Historic Virginia Key Beach Park

Ocean Conservancy and the Miami Super Bowl Host Committee have held a series of beach cleanups and diversion opportunities throughout the 2019-20 NFL season to reach their #SuperCleanupChallenge goal of removing 54 tons of plastic and trash from Florida’s coasts and waterways for Super Bowl LIV. Together, along with hundreds of volunteers, they will host a final cleanup at Historic Virginia Key Beach Park, which will be a part of the NFL’s Huddle for 100 initiative, a program designed to encourage people to log more than 100 million minutes of community service in celebration of the league’s 100th season.

Cleanup Details:

We will be removing trash along Historic Virginia Key Beach Park in Miami, where Biscayne Bay meets the ocean. Water and fruit will be available for volunteers, along with pizza after the cleanup activity. All supplies for the cleanup will be provided, but volunteers should wear appropriate clothing to protect themselves from the sun, wind and bugs and are also encouraged to bring their own work gloves and refillable water bottle. We will be cleaning sandy areas along with mangroves and potentially rocky spots so we encourage you to wear appropriate shoes based on where you plan on cleaning.

~ Event registration opens at 3 PM and volunteers and/or their guardians will be asked to sign a waiver before taking part in the cleanup activity.

~ Parking is available at the park and fees will be waived for all volunteers. We encourage volunteers to carpool and use public transit when possible.

~ Please dress comfortably according to the weather. We suggest wearing a hat for shade, closed-toe shoes or sneakers, and sunscreen. We will have additional sunscreen and bug spray on site.

~ Water will be provided in water coolers. Volunteers should bring their own reusable water bottles and we’ll have paper cups on hand if needed.

~ Reusable gloves and trash bags will be provided; however, feel free to bring your own gardening or work gloves and bucket!

Help us collect important ocean trash data! Volunteers are encouraged to download our free app, Clean Swell, and easily collect data on the debris they find. Download the app in advance and our staff will walk you through the steps at the cleanup. You'll earn a special Super Bowl LIV badge!
