Ocean Conservancy x Discovery Channel Shark Week Cleanup

Celebrate the kick off of Discovery Channel’s Shark Week with a coastline cleanup near you!

On Saturday, July 21, Discovery Channel is partnering with Ocean Conservancy to clean up beaches across the United States. Scientists estimate that more than 17 billion pounds (8 million metric tons) of plastic enters our ocean every year. Plastics in our ocean are a threat to marine life, from corals polyps to sharks. Over the past 32 years, Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup has brought together nearly 13 million people from 150 countries and counting to collect nearly 250 million pounds of trash along our coastlines and waterways.

Join us as we give back to our favorite finned friends and keep the waters they call home free of trash.

We will be set up on the sand/beach by South Pointe Pier

BRING WITH YOU:

  • Volunteers should dress comfortably according to the weather.
  • It is suggested to wear a hat for shade, closed-toe shoes/sneakers and sunscreen.
  • We will have additional sunscreen & bug spray on site.
  • Water will be provided in water coolers, but volunteers should bring their own reusable water bottles.
  • Gloves and trash bags will be provided; however, feel free to bring your own gardening or work gloves and bucket.

OTHER: Help us collect ocean trash data! Volunteers are welcome to be citizen scientists for the morning by downloading our app, Clean Swell and easily collect data on the debris they find. Download the app in advance and we’ll walk you through the steps at the cleanup! www.oceanconservancy.org/cleanswell

This cleanup is also in partnership with VolunteerCleanup.org in Miami! Check out their website for additional upcoming cleanups in the Miami area.
